BONEX Partners NBI and Nova University presented BONEX and the Portuguese Demonstrator Project at the 40th edition of Ovibeja, held in Beja, Portugal, on April 30th.

Nuno Oliveira, CEO of NBI, underscored the crucial role of integrating natural capital in agri-business management models. He presented the BONEX project and showcased different experiences across seven demonstration sites. He discussed specific actions implemented in Portugal, emphasizing the importance and urgency of these sustainable practices for the future of agriculture.

Paula Antunes from CENSE/Nova University delved deeper into the WEFe nexus concept and the participatory approach integral to BONEX. She highlighted the causal diagrams from Portugal and stressed the need for a futuristic and multi-technological perspective.

Madalena Freire de Andrade from SINVEPART SGPS, one of the farms where the BONEX interventions are being implemented, shared insights from her company’s precision agroecological practices that intertwine with biodiversity and ecosystem management. She outlined the holistic risk assessments conducted and the five-year plan involving Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), underscoring the efficiency gains and challenges faced.

Maria Baptista from NOGAM, another beneficiary, discussed how this nut-producing company has incorporated biodiversity and ecosystem management into their core. She highlighted the operational benefits and stressed the importance of communicating best practices and results within the sector.

During a roundtable and Q&A session, speakers shared that agroecological business models are not only becoming increasingly common but also highly profitable. They noted the growing market appreciation for certified environmental practices, particularly in international markets, providing a strong reassurance about the viability and profitability of sustainable farming.
