Beirut, Lebanon – April 10, 2025 – The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) hosted the 4th BONEX National Workshop, held in conjunction with the inauguration of the Solar Hydroponic Glasshouse. The event marked an important milestone in advancing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices in Lebanon through the integration of water, energy, food, and ecosystem (WEFE) considerations.

The workshop brought together representatives from academia, industry, government, and the agricultural sector to discuss the potential of solar-powered hydroponics as a model for resource-efficient food production. Participants explored the achievements of the PRIMA-funded BONEX project, highlighting innovative approaches that combine renewable energy and water-efficient technologies in agriculture.

Opening remarks from AUB leadership emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and innovation in response to Lebanon’s growing sustainability challenges. The sessions featured presentations on the project’s progress and the role of experiential learning in promoting the adoption of new agricultural technologies.

A highlight of the event was the guided visit to the newly inaugurated Solar Hydroponic Glasshouse, a pioneering facility designed as a living laboratory for research, education, and demonstration. The installation showcases how integrated WEFE solutions can support sustainable food systems while reducing environmental impacts.

In closing, participants reaffirmed the importance of collaborative efforts to advance the Nexus approach in Lebanon and the wider Mediterranean region. The workshop underscored AUB’s leadership in driving innovation toward resource-efficient agricultural systems and its dedication to supporting national and regional transitions toward sustainability.
