From September 4โ€“6, 2024, the 10th International Congress of Agroecology – World’s agroecologies: United to face global crises took place at Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Gestรฃo de Viseu (ESTGV), Instituto Politรฉcnico de Viseu, Portugal. This event brought together researchers, associations and farmers across the world.

The congress aimed to enhance the production, consolidation, and sharing of agroecological knowledge to promote sustainable food systems via open debate and consensus on universal principles. Additionally, the congress focused on developing comprehensive agroecological strategies that address technological, socioeconomic, and environmental challenges, thereby fostering a resilient food system capable of tackling climate change and poverty. A significant emphasis was placed on elevating the visibility of agroecology from the Global South, ensuring that these perspectives were recognized in the global discourse on sustainable agriculture.

Irene Perez Ramirez and Jessica Loureiro, from NOVA School of Science and Technology and CENSE members, presented some of the work developed within the BONEX project. A poster titled โ€œNature-based solutions applied to Alentejo’s intensive agricultural landscapeโ€ were presented, such as an oral presentation titled โ€œRelationships between water, energy, food and ecosystems in the Mediterraneanโ€œ on the panel โ€œAgroecology and system – Agroecosystemic approach and evaluationโ€.

The Congress was a key event for increasing the visibility of the research carried out in the BONEX project, as well as for gaining knowledge about agroecology from scientists and farmers from all over the world, while promoting collaboration with existing Portuguese projects covering the Alentejo region.
