On Thursday, 14th December 2023, the 2nd BONEX workshop for the Italian case study was conducted in Bologna. The event was organized by University of Bologna (UNIBO) and Consorzio Della Bonifica Renana (CBR), the local coordinators of the project, in the CBR headquarters. After the first workshop held in 2022 where the main issues within the project area were defined, the objective of this meeting was to co-create and select possible solutions and to make a preliminary assessment of them.

First of all Michele Solmi did the honours as CBR Director of the Agri-environmental area, then, before the practical session, there were three presentations in order to explain the project and the Italian case study progress and to introduce the workshop activities. In particular Stevo Lavrnic, senior researcher of Unibo, explained the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus and reminded stakeholders what the project objectives are. Then Lorenzo Cavallina, CBR agri-environment employee, presented the interventions carried out over the last year in the Lorgana and Botte irrigation district and finally Pietro Drei, PhD student at the Unibo, retraced the steps of the first workshop and exposed the process of co-creation of interventions and the expected outputs of the second one.

After the first introductory part, the working day was divided into three parts. In the first one participants were dived into three groups to think about interventions that could solve the problems that emerged in the first workshop. In this phase, the interventions already developed in the demo project area were presented. Finally a vote was taken to select the 3 most promising proposed interventions. In the second part stakeholders assessed the barriers and opportunities of both the 3 interventions already implemented in the case study and the 3 newly selected ones. In the end, for each intervention it has been assessed if it has a positive or negative impact and to what degree on 12 variables belonging to each component of the WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem).

The event closure was carried out by a brief recap of the results obtained. This day was a very important opportunity to continue the work begun in the first workshop, leading to the active participation of stakeholders of the project area, who had the occasion to work together and get to know each other better.
