Reading time: 2

The 2nd BONEX Workshop Morocco, held on February 01, 2024 in Souss Massa basin – Agadir’s city. The workshop, was organized in collaboration with the Regional Agricultural Development Office (ORMVA), aimed to assess and develop specific tools to improve the practical implementation of the WEFE nexus (water, energy, food, ecosystem) in the basin, integrating socio-economic balance and ecological aspects. The objective set for this second edition is to study the opportunities and impacts of using desalinated water and other technological innovations for sustainable agriculture in the Souss-Massa region.

This highly interactive workshop brought together 37 participants from various institutions. The approach adopted was participatory, conducted with a cross-sectoral vision involving all stakeholders represented by public administrations in agriculture, water, energy, environment, farmers and farmer associations, water user associations, interprofessional organizations, technology suppliers, researchers, NGOs, as well as civil society and consumers.

Following registration, welcome speeches were delivered by Pr. Imani Yasmina (IAV), project coordinator, and Mr. El Mehdi El ARABI (ORMVA-SM) representative, emphasizing the workshop’s significance, especially in the current climate crisis context in the Souss Massa basin. Subsequently, Pr. IMANI Yasmina presented the BONEX project to all participants, focusing on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus and the project’s specific objectives. She also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among different stakeholders for the project’s success. Then, Mr. Lahcen Oulli (ORMVA-SM) representative, gave a brief overview of the current situation in the Souss Massa basin. Prof. Khadija Khouya (IAV-CHA) presented the preliminary results of the project’s first year. Prof. Houda Taimourya (IAV) presented the final version of the causal loop diagram created in collaboration with all stakeholders during the first workshop. Finally, Prof. Mounia Ennami (IAV) opened the workshop session by explaining the approach used and the day’s work methodology.

Facilitators, Prof. Taimourya Houda, Prof. Ennami Mounia, and Prof. Khouya Khadija, divided stakeholders into three heterogeneous groups consisting of a combination of institutions. In the first stage, participants examined and discussed the variables comprising the causal loop diagram, after which each group proposed appropriate solutions for each component of the WEFE concept, indicating the types and degrees of impact of each, while specifying the reasons justifying these choices. The integration of these solutions into the causal loop diagram using the most relevant solutions was the second activity developed by all participants under the coordination of the BONEX team.
