From 4 – 8 September 2023, the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) General Conference 2023 took place at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. The event gathered around 2.500 scientists, representing the largest European political sciences conference. In a panel on “Local Pathways to Sustainable Food systems”, Nora Schütze from University of Kassel gave a presentation on “Governing an agroecological transformation of the Tunisian food system? Institutional analysis of the WEFE nexus in Tunisia”. Given the potential of agroecology to address WEFE nexus issues, such as land degradation, water scarcity and biodiversity loss, Nora discussed the question of how the institutional and governance context in Tunisia relates to a potential agroecology transformation. She thereby also emphasized how the policy framework, as well as economic and institutional constraints hinder self-determination of farmers, autonomous decision-making and adoption of more sustainable farming practices.
