The BONEX intervention for improving the reclaimed water reuse in the irrigated area of Ouardanine presented at the “inter-Regional Technical Platform on Water Scarcity” (iRTP-WS) FAO workshop, 12-16 May, 2025, Hammamet, Tunisia

Olfa Mahjoub, national coordinator of BONEX in Tunisia, was invited to speak at the first workshop on “Integrated Approaches and Evidence-Based Good Practices in Sustainable Land Management and Sustainable Forest Management for Advancing Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE) Integration,” held in Tunisia.

The workshop was organized by the FAO under the framework of the Inter-Regional Technical Platform on Water Scarcity (iRTP-WS), and brought together participants from 10 countries to exchange experiences and showcase successful practices.

In her presentation, titled “WEFE Nexus Implementation for Improving Water Reuse Governance,” Olfa Mahjoub highlighted the Ouardanine demo site as a compelling case study of Water, Land, and Ecosystems integration. She emphasized the role of reclaimed water reuse as a good practice for sustainable land management and a key entry point for advancing WEFE Nexus integration.

She also presented the innovative IoT-based technologies developed within the BONEX project, which enable a holistic and integrated approach to water reuse within the WEFE Nexus framework. BONEX has contributed significantly to closing the knowledge gap among stakeholders regarding the WEFE Nexus approach and has stimulated discussions around improving water governance. These efforts will optimize the management of treated wastewater from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives.

The workshop was an excellent opportunity to bring together BONEX partners from INRGREF and FutureWater. Tania Imran and Brecht D’Haeyer introduced the REWEF tool, developed within the project, which supports decision-making in water reuse, among others, within the WEFE Nexus.
