January 25, 2024 – In an impactful online seminar hosted by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), global experts, including NBI’s Dr. Mafalda Evangelista, convened to address the pressing challenges and innovative solutions at the intersection of ecosystem services, biodiversity, and the journey towards a nature-positive economy. The seminar, part of the Ecosystem Services Working Group Series, brought together leading minds to discuss integrating natural capital and ecosystem services into decision-making, aiming to foster sustainable livelihoods and resilience against biodiversity loss.

Mafalda Evangelista’s presentation highlighted the growing corporate commitments to biodiversity and the necessity of aligning actions across value chains with the mitigation hierarchy. Through examples of nature-based solutions and nature-positive strategies – including those demonstrated by NBI within BONEX – Evangelista illustrated practical approaches for corporations and municipalities to contribute to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service enhancement. Her insights into frameworks like the WBCSD, Science-Based Targets for Nature, and the TNFD underscored the urgency of action and the importance of transparent reporting on nature-related efforts.

As the world grapples with the accelerating degradation of natural environments, the insights shared in this webinar serve as a beacon for organisations and individuals seeking to navigate the path to a nature-positive future. Mafalda Evangelista’s contributions and those of her peers underscore the critical importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic action in the face of environmental challenges.
