As we celebrate World Water Day, it is crucial to recognize the central role that water plays in addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity degradation, water scarcity, and rising energy demands. At BONEX, we are dedicated to advancing the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach, recognizing that solutions cannot be developed in silos but must be integrated across sectors.

Understanding the WEFE Nexus

Todayโ€™s global challenges cannot be tackled independently. Water, energy, food, and ecosystems are deeply interdependent, and decisions made in one sector often have significant consequences on others. While agencies and institutions work to address these challenges, their sectoral structures often limit cross-sectoral cooperation and integrated decision-making.

The WEFE Nexus approach seeks to break down these silos, promoting a holistic view that accounts for trade-offs and synergies. While academic and policy interest in the Nexus has grown exponentially, much of the discussion remains theoretical. Implementation in real-world scenarios is complex, often hindered by conflicting interests and political influences.

Lessons from Real-World Water Management

A striking example of unintended consequences in water management is the modernization of irrigation systems in Spain. While aimed at increasing water-use efficiency, these efforts led to an expansion of irrigated land rather than reducing overall water consumption. This demonstrates how well-intentioned policies can have counterproductive effects when trade-offs are not consideredโ€”a fundamental issue the Nexus approach aims to address.

BONEX: Bridging Theory and Practice

BONEX is committed to transforming Nexus thinking from theory into practical solutions. We provide authorities, planners, and stakeholders with the necessary tools and frameworks to implement Nexus-based strategies effectively.

At the governance level, we focus on two key tools:

  1. REWEFe Tool: Built upon the Real Water Savings (REWAS) model developed by Future Water in collaboration with FAO, REWEFe extends this approach to evaluate the impacts of interventions across all four Nexus dimensionsโ€”water, energy, food, and ecosystems.
  2. WEFE Nexus Bridging Framework (WEFEF): This participatory framework incorporates stakeholder knowledge through Regional Working Groups, ensuring that solutions are context-specific and feasible. The process culminates in Nexus Bridging Plansโ€”tailored action plans for implementing sustainable innovations.

Demonstration Pilots: Realizing the Nexus Approach

Technology and innovation play a key role in sustainable resource management. The BONEX project has established seven Demonstration Pilots across the Mediterranean, each addressing WEFE Nexus challenges through localized, technology-driven solutions:

  • Tunisia (Ouardanine): A smart agrometeorological station and IoT-based irrigation system optimize reclaimed water use in fig tree cultivation, improving efficiency and nutrient management.
  • Spain (La Axarquรญa, Mรกlaga): A nutrient balance calculation tool is being developed to help farmers optimize fertilizer use when irrigating with reclaimed water, reducing environmental impact.
  • Lebanon (Beqaa Valley): Agrivoltaic systems integrate solar energy with greenhouse farming, enhancing resource efficiency in controlled-environment agriculture.
  • Jordan (Wadi Mujib): A solar-powered irrigation system provides an energy-efficient water solution for small-scale farmers, addressing both water scarcity and high energy costs.
  • Italy (Bologna Metropolitan City): Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) like constructed wetlands and retention ponds improve stormwater management, urban agriculture, and biodiversity.
  • Morocco (Agadir): The project tests renewable energy-powered desalination systems to provide a sustainable water supply for agriculture in a water-stressed region.
  • Portugal (Alentejo): Agroforestry and regenerative agriculture practices enhance soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, promoting sustainable rural development.

A Sustainable Future Through Collaboration

Each BONEX Demonstration Pilot exemplifies how integrating water management with energy, food production, and ecosystem conservation can lead to more sustainable solutions. By fostering collaboration, leveraging technology, and incorporating local knowledge, BONEX is paving the way for a more resilient Mediterranean.
